In 1985 Hospital Clinic of Barcelona created the first Transplant Coordination Team in Spain. This Service soon became a medical specialization necessary for the development and growth of the different organ and tissue transplant programs of this institution. The model was little after being implemented in other centres, regions and countries, proving that establishing a Transplant Service managed by TPM specialists raised the activity of such programs due to a donation increase, which allowed a bigger number of receptors to get a transplant.
The main aim of the Service is to get as much organs and tissues as possible from the Hospital itself, reference centres (hospitals that need our support to generate donations), Catalonia, Spain and abroad hospitals through the office for organ exchange for transplants.
The Transplant Coordination basic task involve all the donation process: identification, detection and selection of potential donors, collaboration with donors maintenance process, extraction, transportation of both organs and extraction teams, management of the receptors waiting list, etc. All this is done always respecting the enforce laws.
